Almar Bakarí is a wonderful family-run bakery in Hveragerði, Iceland. Almar and his wife, Ólöf opened the crafts bakery in April 2009 and it has since then become a local favourite.
They specialise in baked bread but each loaf takes up to 18 hours to make. This unique method of baking bread makes it possible to make a mouth-watering loaf with no added sugar, less salt and yeast that usual. This doesn’t only result in an especially delicious taste but makes Almar Bakarí a healthier choice than most other bakeries.
They are renowned for their excellent variety of baked goods and sandwiches but you can also get ice cream, gourmet cheeses, the traditional Icelandic Skyr, juices and freshly brewed coffee from Illy. Almar Bakarí is an excellent choice when looking for a tasty lunch as they offer two kinds of soups and a pasta or noodle dish every day during lunch.
Almar Bakarí is run with such ambition and passion that you can almost taste it in their baked goods. They strive to offer their customers a warm and welcoming setting along with friendly and efficient service. It’s the perfect pit stop to grab some snacks for the road, or if you want to treat yourself after a day of fun activities.
You have to try their ‘Hverabrauð’ or Hot Spring Bread. It is quite similar to rye bread except it is cooked using only geothermal and natural heat. The dough is made and put in a container which is then buried near a hot spring and the heat from the earth does the baking. A complete must-try when you are in Hveragerði! The Hot Spring Bread is hearty and pairs perfectly with cheese.
